Welcoming 2026: 5 Tips for Beginning the New Year

Welcoming 2026: 5 Tips for Beginning the New Year

The turning of a new year doesn’t have to arrive with a long list of resolutions. I prefer to welcome a new year the same way I welcome a new season in our home, slowly, intentionally, and with room to breathe.

As 2026 begins, here are five simple ways to step into the year with clarity, peace, and purpose, without the overwhelm.

1. Focus on simple habits rather than resolutions.

Resolutions often ask too much, too quickly. Trying to follow strict rules you set for yourself opens the door for feeling discouraged or like you've failed the second you don't live up to your own expectations. Simple habits, on the other hand, are lived out quietly one ordinary day at a time. Pay attention to the small things you can do daily. A consistent morning routine, taking time to step outside, keeping your home tended in small ways. These habits shape your days without pressure. With established daily routines reaching any goals will become more attainable.

2. Choose A Guiding Word.

Instead of a long list of goals, consider choosing one word or theme to shape your year, something like simplicity, steadfast, home, or rest. A guiding word becomes a reminder. When life gets busy you can return to that word and ask yourself if something aligns with what you are trying to accomplish for your life. Just a quick thought of your word can help you quickly see if you are veering off course and allows you to simply get back on track. No big moment of failure or feeling like you should give up, just a gentle shift in the right direction.

3. Put your house in order.

There’s something powerful about beginning the year by caring for the space that holds your everyday life. You don't have to do a full reset, just a little tending to a few areas that may not be setting right with you. You may want to rearrange some furniture, pair back some decor or household items, or simply light a candle and enjoy some ambiance. A peaceful home often leads to a more peaceful mind.

4. Pay attention to how you spend your time.

Time has a way of slipping by unnoticed if we aren’t paying attention. The days that feel full are often made up of very small choices, what we say yes to, what we allow to take our focus, and what quietly fills our hours. As the year begins, it’s worth taking an honest look at how your time is spent. Not with guilt or urgency, but with care. What feels worthwhile? What leaves you feeling scattered or rushed? Paying attention to these patterns makes it easier to shape days that feel more settled and intentional. This is an area that I want to especially work on this year. Time is our most precious commodity. There's no getting it back, so we must spend it wisely.

5. Accept the year as it comes.

No matter how thoughtfully we begin, a year will always unfold in ways we didn’t expect. Plans change, seasons shift, life happens in ways we couldn't have imagined in January.   Accepting the year as it comes doesn’t mean giving up on intention. It means we allow room for change, for rest, for moments that weren’t part of the plan. Often, the most meaningful parts of a year are the ones we never could have planned for at all.

As 2026 begins, I’m reminded that a good year is rarely built all at once. It’s shaped quietly, through small habits kept, a home cared for, time spent with intention, and a willingness to accept what the year brings. There’s no need to rush or reinvent everything in January. Begin where you are, tend to what’s been given, and let the rest unfold in its own time.

Happy New Year,

Tammie

I love your simple style! I want simple to be my motto this year. I have a couple of questions. I have wood beams in my kitchen like yours and I want to hang my basket collection like you did. I love it! What did you use to hang them and could I get a picture of them hanging up? Also, I love all the beautiful sweaters you wear, where do you find them? Thank you for opening up your home to viewers!! You quiet manner definitely helps me slow down.

I love the new year to start slow and relaxing, taking in the views and deciding what changes you want or none at all. You did a wonderful view of how to enjoy this time of year. Happy New Year and will be waiting for all the wonderful things you have to share this year 2026.
