Simple Sourdough Cinnamon Rolls (Great For Beginners)

Simple Sourdough Cinnamon Rolls (Great For Beginners)

These cinnamon rolls were so easy to make! They were a real confidence booster for my beginners sourdough journey.

There's nothing like pulling warm cinnamon rolls from the oven and having that weft of cinnamon envelope your senses. The only thing that makes it better is knowing you made them with your own two hands and a nurturing process that takes devotion. More importantly is your reason why. For me, sourdough is something I really want to make for the health of my family. The deliciousness is a wonderful bonus.

I fed my starter the night before. For some reason my starter seems to take longer to reach its peak than what I have heard others say it should. Most say it will double and be ready to use within 4 or 5 hours after feeding. Mine seems to take about 10 to 12 hours. I'm not sure why. It may be because our house stays 68 degrees Fahrenheit. Also we are at a higher elevation than others that I know that makes sourdough. We also have very little humidity. I would think those factors would make everything process quicker, though, so I'm not sure why mine takes longer, but it does.

So, by late morning my starter was ready and I added it along with my other ingredients to make the dough. Then I mixed them together with my stand mixer for a few minutes until they turned into a nice ball of dough. For these cinnamon rolls I followed Lisa's at Farmhouse On Boone recipe because it was straightforward and beginner-friendly. I'll link it here so you can follow along exactly as I did. Then I sprinkled a little flour on the counter to easily roll out the dough in a rectangular shape using my rolling pin.

Next I spread the delicious cinnamon filling on top of the dough that I had mixed in my small mixing bowl. My wooden spoon worked great for both mixing and spreading the mixture.

I love that this filling is also made with healthy ingredients that give the cinnamon rolls the perfect touch of sweetness.

After the filling is spread it's time to roll the dough from the long side of the rectangle. Once rolled up, I pinched along the seam to make sure they didn't unroll. You can use string or unflavored dental floss to cut the roll into sections, but I didn't have either so I just used a good sharp knife and tried to saw back and forth to avoid squishing them as much as possible.

Then I added them to my large baking dish. I could have cut them a little thinner and had more rolls that would have fit closer together in the dish, but I cut mine a bit thick and spaced them equally apart, which allowed them to rise into nice round shaped cinnamon rolls.

After pulling the cinnamon rolls from the oven and putting aside to cool it was time to make the cream cheese icing.

For the cream cheese frosting I added the ingredients to a sauce pan over medium heat and stirred until smooth and creamy

Then I was able to pour the icing on top of the cinnamon rolls that had cooled enough that the icing wouldn't run off.

I am happy to say the cinnamon rolls could not have turned out more perfectly, and on my first attempt!

There are many different versions of sourdough cinnamon roll recipes out there and why I chose this one was because it seemed simple and doable on top of the fact that it wasn't heavy on sugar and was sweetened mostly with honey and of course brown sugar for the cinnamon filling. All good ingredients!

It's easy for me to say I will be making these again!

The Calendula Appetizer Plate is just perfect for a big, delicious, cinnamon roll.

I would love to know if you bake sourdough. If you do what is your favorite thing to make? If you don't make sourdough and want to learn I hope you will follow along. We can learn together!
