New Year Home Refresh

Easing into 2026 with a little refresh in the keeping room. The new year always prompts me to want to put my home in order. This can mean doing some deep cleaning, editing, or rearranging. This week I started with the latter and gave the seating area in the keeping room a new look.

I have often thought about rearranging the furniture in this space, but every time I would picture a new arrangement in my head I would think that it just wouldn't work. With the new year urging me to try something new, I finally decided to give it a try. 

I first tried pulling the couch away from the wall in front of the window and putting the wingback chairs directly across from it. Then I added the rug to the center of the seating arrangement directly in front of the fireplace. I didn't take any pictures that arrangement. You can see it in my YouTube vlog (here). I actually liked this look, but decided to try it another way that I had also been thinking about.

I slid the couch on around to face the fireplace from the center of the room. Then I placed the wingback chairs, flanking the fireplace. I really liked this look and decided to leave it this way. This arrangement did require some editing. I removed the small candle table from the room and also decided to remove the table that I usually have in the center of the room. 

I relocated it to the wall under the mirror in the stair hallway. I also decided to bring a few other things into the room. I added one other the antique chairs that I recently purchased to the wall beside the stairs and the other one to the wall beside the front door.

The little table that normally sits between the wingback chairs, now, sits to the right of one of the wingbacks. This spot ended up just perfect for a lamp since there's an electric outlet on the wall under the window beside the table. I brought in the Ashford Metal Table Lamp and added the Trenton Jacquard 12" Lamp Shade. I swapped out the throw that I have had on the couch for the Trenton Jacquard Afghan.

I think they are the perfect additions for a timeless look. I love the pattern and texture and how it adds some warmth and character to the space.

I am really surprised at how spacious the room feels with this new arrangement of the furniture. There's still plenty of space to walk through the room even with items along the wall by the stairs.

There's something oh so cozy about a fireplace flanked with wingback chairs. This is definitely going to be my favorite spot in the house. You will be able to find me curled up with a book by the fireplace hibernating for the rest of winter. Now, I just need a fire in the fireplace. A nice snowfall out the window would be nice, too, but that might be asking a bit much for our Texas weather. Lol. 

Maybe I'll just start with some cold enough weather for a fire in the fireplace. We have had a very mild December so I am sure January will bring the colder temperatures. It usually does.

Until then I am not going to complain about the sunshine. I am not really a fan of winter, yet I do like to experience a little colder weather and embrace the cozy season. How about you? Do you consider yourself a summer person or a winter person?
